"Broomhead" (掃把頭)
[edit]My eleven-year-old girls, meaning my students, thought that calling someone "Broomhead" was very childish. They were grown up enough to know better. What does that say about Ms. Ip's supposedly adult male detractors, that eleven-year-old girls are behaving more maturely than them?
Untitled
[edit]Deleted: She was an advocate of Hong Kong's transfer from colony to Special Administrative Region, earning her the nickname "Red Regina" from her critics.
Martin Lee and Szeto Wah was among the first advocate of ending UK's colonization in Hong Kong in the 80's. By 1996 when Ip was head of Immigration Department, with the Sino-british Joint Declaration and Basic Law in place, controversy about the return of Hong Kong to China has long died down. The quoted "nickname", if exist, is not in wide use (at least much less than the title of "Hong Kong's Iron Lady"). - Hlaw 13:31, 5 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit]She earned her MA from in English Lit. from University of Glasgow. Anyone knows the details and adds to the contents? Investorjoe 07:36, 12 March 2006 (UTC) The subject of Regina Ip's M. Litt. thesis at U of Glasgow was the poetry of Sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586). Her tutor was Robert Cummings, an editor of Edmund Spenser's petry, among other things. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Reginaip (talk • contribs) 15:54, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Major edits
[edit]I've reorganized the article so her biography aren't full of controversies and opinions, and were put in the appropriate section. Why must HK political figures be pre-labelled by strongly anti-government liberal figures here on Wikipedia? Ever heard of a Wikipedia policy called Objectivity?
However, I don't see the encyclopedic value of her being called 'Broomhead'. If anyone should disagree with me on this please say so here. If not, I'll simply remove this section in a month or two. Jsw663 (talk) 06:26, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
- No reason why Tung Chee Hwa can be referred to as "Old Confused Tung" in his article, and she cannot be referred to by her public persona broomhead name. This is not even about objectivity. There is supposed to be people doing research to balance the articles out. I am sure Mrs Ip has done some good humanitarian work in her career worth mentioning. Her supporters don't bother to add that. Instead of adding positive materials, they delete negative materials. Is the wrong approach, is basically censorship. Benjwong (talk) 18:21, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
If the George W. Bush has a whole separate section on his nicknames, I fail to see how one brief line and a image serving as proof can be considered unencyclopaedic. Ohconfucius (talk) 06:02, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
I have today reverted what looks to me like an attempt at sanitation by the subject herself or a party close to her. Her quote about Hitler is notorious: It is a matter of public record, and I do not think it ought to be removed just because it is something which she wishes to forget having ever said. Please be reminded that this encyclopaedia is not a soapbox for a politician seeking election. Ohconfucius (talk) 06:02, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- I personally don't see why the comment about Hitler was so notorious. It's absolutely correct. Many elected officials have commited enormous abuses of human rights, including genocide. Referring to Hitler is clearly a case of going to the most extreme example, but another (George Bush) is mentioned above in this talk section.--58.7.136.200 (talk) 05:22, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
Ancestry and false category
[edit]One or more of her ancestors may have been from Nanhai, but Ip was born in Hong Kong. I would contend that the Category:People from Nanhai is inappropriate, and have once again removed it. Ohconfucius (talk) 15:31, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

To add to article
[edit]To add to this article: her net worth. 173.88.246.138 (talk) 10:05, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
Driver
[edit]Why is having a driver considered notable to be included in the personal life section? Ursula von der Leyen and Donald Trump almost certainly have drivers yet that is not included in their articles, especially not under “personal life”. It feels out of place in a section that solely talks about her family. Andro611 (talk) 03:22, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
- Having a driver, a car, and a parking spot in Hong Kong is extremely expensive and notable. The section has a label of "personal life" and not "family" MowerBreeze (talk) 13:50, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
- Most politicians and notable people in Hong Kong are wealthy, it would be more notable among her class if she didn't have those things. However having a car in Hong Kong is not extremely expensive and notable as cars are much cheaper in Hong Kong because of low taxes. On the other hand having a car in Singapore, where the tax on personal vehicles is a 100%, is extremely expensive.
- A lot of the financial and political class in Hong Kong would be classified as “ultra high net worth individuals“, the city has the largest number of those in the world.[1]https://www.statista.com/statistics/960155/hong-kong-high-net-worth-individuals-by-wealth-group/ [2]https://www.internationalinvestment.net/internationalinvestment/news/3502937/hong-kong-surpasses-york-home-largest-cluster-uhnwis
- None of the other UHNWIs have “has a personal driver” in their personal life section so why specifically add it in for Regina Ip? What makes Regina Ip's employment of driver more notable than any of the other's? Properties listed are definitely of interest and notable because they may expose corruption or conflict of interest in a politician, but not having a driver. What's next Trump's pool cleaner being listed in his personal life? Andro611 (talk) 01:53, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
- You must be unfamiliar with the vehicle registration tax in Hong Kong and how expensive it is:
