Source needed for the bullsquid incident

Also, is there a concrete source for Bill Cobbs being the model for Eli? I mean, no argument, Eli looks a lot like Bill, but is there an "official" confirmation on this? (If so, I'm guessing it'll be in the Raising the Bar book.) -DynSkeet (talk) 14:19, May 24, 2005 (UTC)

I've added a RtB reference to the "third-party books" line. It does say the a bullsquid took Eli's leg. It also names Robert Guillaume as the voice for Eli. Unfortunately, while the book has a picture of Eli's model, it does not provide a name for the face. — EagleOne\^Talk 16:33, Jun 25, 2005 (UTC)

I got the book recently, and edited the article appropriately. I decided to keep the Bill Cobbs references, since the finished model does resemble him a bit, but added the comment about the local homeless man, based off the sentence in RtB: "Eli (model) was holding a sign and looking for work on the street"--YoungFreud 23:25, 11 July 2005 (UTC)

About Eli's leg

I believe the Prima Official Game Guide for HL2 states directly that Eli lost his leg to a bullsquid while helping Kleiner over a barrier into a Combine city. However, I don't actually own the guide myself, but I did a Google search and found this. Search for the post by by chrille on March 2, 2006, or just read this quote he posted from the guide:

“ Like Kleiner, Eli is also a brilliant scientist, but much more of a hands-on, pragmatic inventor of devices. He lost his leg to a Bullsquid while struggling to get Dr. Kleiner over a barrier into the comparative safety of a Combine city. He now works as a figurehead for the resistance, bridging the gap between Kleiner's abstract theories and the practical needs of the revolutionaries. Eli is warm, good-humored, and charismatic, holding everyone around him in the aura of his personal charm. His wife, Azian, was lost in the Black Mesa Incident." ”

I would add the guide as a reference for the sentence in the article that needs a citation, but I don't know how to do a proper citation on Wikipedia with the superscript number and such. I tried and it didn't work. Could someone please add this as a reference to replace the 'citation needed ' thing? MarphyBlack 05:20, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

About the term "African-American"

This is something that often peeves me. An African-American is a person of African descent that is a United States citizen and resident. Dr. Eli Vance, although black, is not a citizen of the United States nor does he live in th US, as Half-Life 2 is set in Europe, and therefore not an African-American. I would like to suggest a change to this page accordingly. --Twigge 10:11, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Um, the original game took place in New Mexico, which is in America, and Eli lived within the Black Mesa Facility itself, as did most personnel. Since he lived in the country, I think it's pretty safe to say that he is a US citizen. MarphyBlack 10:34, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Inside Joke About Alyx's Father

I noticed in the article, it mentions that the role of Eli as Alyx's father was originally meant to be Captain Vance, a leader of the resistance, before being combined with the scientist Eli Maxwell. I don't know for sure, but I think Valve slipped an inside joke pertaining to this into Episode One.

Shortly after arriving at the last resistance pocket, Alyx and the player come upon several resistance members watching a KleinerCast on a television. One expresses disdain over having to watch it, and then spots Alyx. He says to her, somewhat bitterly (not exact dialog), "say, you're Dr. Kleiner's daughter, aren't you?" To which she replies, "no, my father's Odessa Cubbage." Colonel Cubbage is another leader of the resistance, serving the role likely meant for Captain Vance.

That little joke never made sense to me, until reading that tidbit in this article.

He Knew About His Upcoming Death?

Towards the end of the game he seemed to become upset that he wasn't able to tell the player (Gordon Freeman) more than he has already as if he knew what was about to happen, considering he has already been affiliated with the Gman I suppose anything is possible and it has made him a more mysterious character.
