- 1897 – The Ussuri Railway, one of four railways that made up the East Siberian Railway, opens connecting Vladivostok to Khabarovsk.
- 1997 – Union Pacific Railroad and the United States Federal Railroad Administration introduce the Safety Assurance Compliance Process.
- 1999 – RailAmerica takes over operations of former Santa Fe Railroad subsidiary, Toledo, Peoria and Western Railway (pictured), for a purchase price of approximately $18 million.
- 2004 – The Canadian Museum of Rail Travel, in Cranbrook, British Columbia, holds grand opening ceremonies for its new museum facilities.
