Wondering how to edit this U.S. City Entry?
The WikiProject U.S. Cities standards might help.
95534 and 95503 zip
[edit]Cutten is an adjacent unincorporated community tied in every way to its larger neighbor, the City of Eureka, thus it is part of Greater Eureka, which the US Census defines as the Eureka Urban Cluster. EVERY address of all 3,000 plus residents and businesses has BOTH a Eureka, Ca street address and a Eureka-specific phone number. The Cutten Post Office is a very small one-person PO for the convenience of area residents who do not want to travel to the Main Greater Eureka Post Office (down off busy Broadway- miles away). The PO at Cutten has its own zip - 95534, just as all Post Offices do. Even the main PO downtown ( or rather off Broadway) has its own zip (95502) unrelated to physical property addresses.ALL post offices have a distinct PO zip separate from the zips used for the physical areas served. In the case of Eureka, ALL Greater Eureka area addresses have the 95501 and 95503 (and others- but that's too complicated for the Cutten issue). Pull up a Zip Code map of the region through a real estate search ( those are easy to find) and it's easy to see that ALL Cutten physical addresses ARE in the 95503 zip ( years ago it was 95501, then a split happened to make life easier at the Main Eureka PO). However, long ago planners included Cutten within the larger context of Eureka, so the little Cutten PO was not expanded. In an age of consolidation, the Cutten PO will likely never see expansion, and may cease to exist, therefore NO specific ADDITIONAL Cutten zip will be created. HB Fire, the consolidated fire suppression resources for the City ("proper" of Eureka) and the old Humboldt Fire District #1 (serving the unincorporated CDPs and neighborhoods surrounding Eureka "proper," all of which are part of Greater Eureka) were consolidated around 2011 as an administrative cost-cutting measure to serve all 50,000 to 55,000 residents of the Greater Eureka Area. The documents related to this consolidation list Cutten prominently (however, I'm looking for the "best" source to cite in the article, so please be patient). In any case, the residents of Cutten and all Cutten institutions, such as the only major grocery store, Cutten Elementary School, and Winship Jr High School ( also part of Eureka City Schools) are ALL physically LOCATED in the Cutten CDP, BUT ALL have Eureka addresses and Eureka phone numbers. Btw, the US Census defines Greater Eureka ( an official local government term) as the Eureka Urban Cluster (UC). I hope this begins to clear this up. However part of the difficulty here is a complex, often messy relationship between the City of Eureka and it's unincorporated, adjacent and nearby CDPs and neighborhoods...but that is a very long "story" for another time and place. The facts above are facts...some require digging, but the zip code issue requires one Google search of zip code maps, and this issue goes away (until the next time it comes up somewhere else!). :-) Norcalal (talk)
