- 1824 – Henry C. Lord, president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway 1868–1869, is born.
- 1902 – Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad and Southern Pacific Railroad jointly inaugurate the Golden State Limited passenger train (pictured) between Chicago, Illinois, and Los Angeles, California.
- 1967 – Canadian Pacific Railway removes the diamond crossing at Bedell, Ontario, the junction of the railway's Winchester and Prescott subdivisions.
- 2000 – VIA Rail operates a funeral train for Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau between Ottawa and Montreal; the train's journey, which was frequently slowed through towns for the numerous well-wishers, was documented by a CBC news helicopter.
