Inclusion of Instructors of Other Martial Arts under Notable Students
[edit]Should Pendekar Paul de Thouars, Edgar Sulite, Leo Gaje and other instructors of various styles actually be included under "Notable Students"? Perhaps broken out into separate "Influences" section?
List of Full Instructors
[edit]As the list of full instructors has disappeared from the Inosanto Academy Page, perhaps adding a section on "Full Instructors", those certified under Dan Inosanto to teach the system may be appropriate to include to help people seeking information on local training.
Notable students
[edit]List is growing and I suppose it should be trimmed but I have noticed one deletion that seems more to do with petty politics than reality. If you feel that Ernest Emerson should not be there - than give a reason. Was he not a student, or not notable enough? The list itself seems to be just a collection of favortite names with no indication why they are notable. I figure that if they have their own wiki page than they could be considered notable - if not at least some indication should be given as to why.Peter Rehse 08:04, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
- Here are 4 sources documenting Ernest Emerson's claim as a student of Dan Inosanto:
- Combs, Roger (2004), "Emerson Knives", Knives Illustrated, vol.18 no. 2, p.36
- "He (Emerson) moved from Northern Wisconsin to California for the sole purpose of training at...The Filipino KALI Acadamey. In the mid-'70s it was the onlly true full contact fighting school in the world. The school was run by world-renowned martial artists Dan Inosanto and Richard Bustillo."
- Tieves, Bruce (1998), "Captain Tactical", Blade Magazine, vol. 25, no. 1, p. 41
- "After earning a degree physical education in the late '70s, Emerson headed west from Wisconsin to California to study a martial art under the guidance of Dan Inosanto (a close friend of the late actor and martial arts master, Bruce Lee). The Filipino-influenced martial at which Ernest studied entailed the use of blades, namely, butterfly knives. Unable to afford a $250 blade at the time, Emerson made his own knife with a file and vise and was soon building blades for his martial arts cohorts."
- Norman, Chris (1995), "Ernest Emerson", Knives Illustrated, vol. 10, no. 4, p. 104
- "Emerson began serious martial arts training 22 years ago, at age 17, and holds instructor rankings in Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Kali and Escrima and is currently training in the combat oriented style of Gracie Jiu Jitsu."
- (1998)Combat Knives Magazine
- "...part of what sets Ernest Emerson apart from many knifemakers is the fact that he talks the talk and walks the walk. He has spent approximately 25 years training in various martial arts. He holds instructor rankings in Jeet Kune Do (Bruce Lee's style), Filipino Kali and Escrima and is currently training in the Gracie jiu-jitsu style, which places emphasis on ground grappling techniques."
I dont see the point in the "Notable" Students section. What is meant by "Notable"? They paid Inosantos high fees? They have lots of paying students? There has been nothing "notable" about the people Inosanto has trined. Merely well trained teachers passing on Inosantos mistakes. This whol article is not NPOV.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.211.162.87 (talk • contribs)
- Try reading WP:NOTE for an explanation of notability, I have (again) cropped out ones without articles but all need sourcing. --Nate1481( t/c) 13:42, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
- Agreed, they should at least have a wiki article for notability. This entire article needs more sourcing. Mike Searson 13:52, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
- I have again removed unlinked and and source people as is not explication for their inclusion, with the exception of his daughter. --Nate1481(t/c) 14:50, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what you're trying to say here, but the mere fact that someone has a Wikipedia article is not necessarily a criteria for inclusion as a student of Dan Inosanto. For inclusion, the student should be 1.) notable in his or her own right and 2.) reliably sourced as a student of Dan Inosanto's. Whether or not the person has an article on Wikipedia is irrelevant. There's no doubt in my mind that Francis Fong and Rick Young are notable martial artists with easily documented links to Dan Inosanto, even though they don't have Wikipedia articles. So if we're going to do this the hard way, then the entire (unsourced) part of the list needs to be moved to the talk page, and re-added to the list once they are sourced for this article. Notable student candidates
[edit]Please cross of the list when reliably sourced as 1.) notable, and 2.) a student of Dan Inosanto's. MoodyGroove (talk) 15:14, 15 August 2008 (UTC)MoodyGroove

Biographical information on Dan
[edit]Here's an interesting bio from the Francis Fong Academy website. I'd love to see something about Dan's military service, how he met Bruce Lee, and how he got into the Filipino Martial Arts in the article. I'm busy this week, but I'll eventually get around the transcribing his interviews in the Definitive Inosanto Collection. Fascinating stuff! MoodyGroove (talk) 15:20, 16 August 2008 (UTC)MoodyGroove
Chuck Norris?
[edit]Please someone explain how Chuck was trained by Inosanto when he was clearly trained by Korean martial artists. Please someone tell me Inosanto has a 10th degree black belt in Hapkido and Tang Soo Do.Ickesshadow (talk) 21:44, 30 December 2010 (UTC) having a mastery in a given art does not stop one from obtaining further training from other people. if he only trained "tang soo do" and nothing else we wouldnt even know his name because he wouldnt be as good as he is.
