TOC has vanished

[edit]

Since recently no articles seem to have a TOC. The HTML for a page contains:

<meta property="mw:PageProp/toc" />

where I'd expect to see a TOC, but no content. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.27.171.241 (talk) 13:23, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Today (25th March 2023), the table of contents has reappeared! On desktop it appears in a separate scrolling section to the left of the document. I hope it is here to stay. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.27.171.241 (talk) 16:02, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not seeing TOCs on any Wikipedia pages anymore - why? This is a degradation, IMHO. Thanks. Sullidav (talk) 13:23, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Sullidav: I see a TOC at the top of this page. However, this is not the page to report such problems (it is the talk page for discussing improvements to the page Help:Section), you should first try WP:HD, where I see an existing thread Wikipedia:Help desk#Missing TOC; failing that, try WP:VPT. In both cases, you should state which pages are affected, which skin and browser you are using, and whether there is any difference when you are logged out. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 14:30, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Redrose64 - Thanks. I do not see a TOC at the top of this page, so it's evidently some kind of browser/interface error. Glad it's not a Wikipedia change. Sullidav (talk) 19:24, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Follow-up - I switched skins to an older one as that discussion suggests, but it looks like the issue was that I was used to seeing TOC at top of the page, not where it is now, in the left column below the Wikipedia menu. I think that's the only issue - that TOCs moved to a sort of hidden place. Sullidav (talk) 19:32, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So you were using Vector-2022 skin, which is a pile of crap. But this is still the wrong venue to report such problems. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:35, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

TOC -> ToC

[edit]

The acronym for Table of Contents (i.e., TOC), is correctly written as ToC and not as TOC, since we write the word of non-capitalized, the acronym should reflect that, as is true for all other acronyms of such sort. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.230.193.195 (talk) 11:19, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The redirect NOTOC has been listed at redirects for discussion to determine whether its use and function meets the redirect guidelines. Readers of this page are welcome to comment on this redirect at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2024 March 30 § NOTOC until a consensus is reached. 1234qwer1234qwer4 00:41, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Highlight information

[edit]

At a certain point this request may simply violate the style standards of Wikipedia and the answer to it is 'read harder'. Further, the content I am requesting highlighted may not be important enough to justify.

That said, I feel the sentence "The maximum level number is six" is a particularly important one for those seeking Help:Section. I think some stylized emphasis would aid in quickly scanning the page.

Please change the unemphasized sentence "The maximum level number is six" to have some emphasized stylization. Tule-hog (talk) 23:44, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

 Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{Edit semi-protected}} template. DonIago (talk) 12:56, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is this talk page the right place to seek consensus for that edit? Tule-hog (talk) 21:49, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're looking for an edit to Help:Section. This is the Talk page for that Help page, so I would say so. DonIago (talk) 02:20, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal: remove "Positioning the TOC" and similar content

[edit]

Wikipedia's two main skins (Vector-2022 and Minerva) do not have a table of contents in a box that can be positioned. The mobile apps don't put it in a box, and the print layouts don't show it. Is there a reason to retain content written for Monobook but no longer applicable to any default layout? Rjjiii (talk) 04:19, 30 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
