National Chung Hsing University (NCHU; Chinese: 國立中興大學; lit. National Resurgence University)[4] is a comprehensive research university in the South District, Taichung, Taiwan.[5] It originated from the Advanced Academy of Agronomy and Forestry, established by the Government-General of Taiwan. After the founding of Taihoku Imperial University, it was incorporated as a department affiliated to Taihoku Imperial University. Later in 1943, it became an independent institution and was relocated to Taichung. NCHU excels in various research fields such as agricultural sciences, agricultural economics, veterinary medicine, life sciences, translational medicine, materials science, biomedical engineering, biotechnology, and green technology. In 2022, in alignment with Taiwan’s 2050 Net-Zero Emission Pathway and the development plan of Zhongxing New Village University Town, the university established the first Academy of Circular Economy in Asia at its Nantou campus, focusing on three main areas: new agriculture, smart technology, and green semiconductors. The university currently consists of 12 colleges and two affiliated high schools: the Affiliated Taichung Agricultural Vocational High School of National Chung Hsing University and the Affiliated Senior High School of National Chung Hsing University.

In recent years, NCHU has collaborated with several institutions, including Taichung Veterans General Hospital, National Changhua University of Education, and China Medical University, focusing on three major areas: cancer medicine, immunological medicine, and biomedical engineering, gradually translating laboratory research into clinical applications. In 2022, NCHU established its Department of Post-Baccalaureate Medicine, becoming the first national university in Central Taiwan to offer a medical program. Instead of establishing its own teaching hospital, NCHU’s College of Medicine adopts the Harvard Medical School model by partnering with nearby hospitals to train medical professionals. NCHU also collaborates with the Taichung City Government through an MOU to jointly promote digital culture and smart city development.

In 2024, NCHU signed sister university agreements with the University of Tasmania and the University of New South Wales in Australia.

History

[edit]
Administration Building

NCHU has undergone a number of stages of change. It was first established in 1919, during the Japanese occupation, as the Advanced Academy of Agronomy and Forestry in Taipei. In 1928, the academy became a special department affiliated to Taihoku Imperial University. In 1943, the department became an independent school and moved to Taichung. After 1945 when control of Taiwan was transferred from Japan to ROC, the school was reorganized and renamed as “Taiwan Provincial Taichung Agricultural Junior College.” In 1946, the Junior College was promoted to the level of provincial college, the Taiwan Provincial College of Agriculture. In 1961, the school was combined with the newly-founded College of Science and Engineering on the same Taichung campus, and the College of Law and Business, established in Taipei in 1949, to form the Taiwan Provincial Chung Hsing University. Since then, NCHU has continued to grow in size. In 1971, the school became a national university, and changed to its present name: National Chung Hsing University.[6]

Campus

[edit]

The main campus contains the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the College of Science, the College of Engineering, the College of Life Sciences, the College of Veterinary Medicine, the College of Management, the College of Law and Politics, the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the College of Medicine, and the International College of Innovation and Industry Liaison. It is located in the south of Taichung City and has an area of approximately 53 hectares.

The university has four experimental forest stations located respectively in New Taipei City (Wenshan Forest Station), Nantou County (Huisun Forest Station), Taichung City (Tungshih Forest Station), and Tainan City (Hsinhua Forest Station). It also has two experimental farms located at Wufeng and Wuri in Taichung City and a Horticultural Experiment Station located at Renai in Nantou County.

Organization

[edit]

NCHU has 12 colleges, which are subdivided into 34 departments, 30 graduate institutes and 30 cross-department degree programs, with the Center for General Education as an independent academic organization set up to ensure the balanced study of different academic fields. In total, the university offers more than 44 bachelor’s programs, 96 master’s programs and 36 doctoral programs. The school offers over 6,300 courses each year, among which more than 3,700 are for undergraduate level and 750 are in English, supporting 5 completely English-taught degree programs. Because of all of this, the academic environment created at NCHU offers all students the freedom to choose their own particular path of learning.
